Sunscreen For Your Eyes

 

I know that most of you have heard all the rage about blue light lenses.  Basically, blue light filter lenses are doing the same thing sunscreen does for your skin only for your eyes.  Blue light is everywhere and it is produced both by natural sources like the sun, but is also produced by other non-natural sources such as cell phones, laptops, and television screens.

Our absorption of blue light, and concern regarding its effect on our eyes has become quite a popular topic these days.  Blue light filter lenses have been designed to help combat the potential strain on our vision.  While trendy right now for their health benefits let’s talk about are they worth it? Do they really benefit our eyes?

The two big issues that the harmful rays of blue light can do to our eyes are cause retinal damage, and increase our chances of developing macular degeneration.  Still there is no scientific evidence that blue light from devices can cause damage, however, for sure the sun can damage your eyes.  Using your phone or computers late at night will certainly disrupt your ability to sleep well.  Research has shown some of the benefits of blue filter lenses are that people do claim to notice that wearing blue filter lenses reduces eyes strain from the computer, and helps allow individuals to sleep better.

During Covid many of us have spent much more time on our computers and cell phone devices while working from home.  Working more on our devices has exposed us to more of the harmful blue light rays so this is a great time to learn about how best to protect your vision.  

A study was conducted using 63 business leaders and 67 call center representatives in Brazil.  Participants randomly had blue filter lenses in their glasses while some had placebo glasses.  Researchers at the University of Indiana also have studied the harmful effects of blue light on our eyes and both studies have concluded that we do perform better at our jobs with blue-filter helping us be more productive and blue filter lenses are an effective intervention to improving our sleep.
